MAN OVER BOARD M.O.B.

MOB The actions for a MOB (Man Overboard) are usually extremely urgent although depended on parameters and must be taken without any delay to save the person who has fallen overboard.

DON’T PANIC Take a deep breath and assess the overall situation.

PUSH "MOB" & INFROM CREW Push “MOB” on the yacht’s chartplotter, if you have one and make the entire crew fully aware of the situation.

THROW BUOY & ASSIGN A MOB & BUOY WATCH Throw asap the lifebuoy over the side to the MOB. Mark the MOB with a buoyant smoke flare if handy and needed. Assign a crewmember to point at the MOB in the water. Continue to do this the entire time & don’t lose sight of the MOB.

PREPARE LINE - CIRCLE - STOP Prepare a throwing line. Think parameters and make the best MOB circle manouvra. Bring the boat alongside the MOB, with the boat pointing into the wind and the propeller stopped.

PULL OR WINCH Get a line around the MOB and get them safely aboard the best way possible. Use a winch if needed.

MONITOR Monitor the MOB’s condition. Watch closely for signs of hypothermia (exposure) and contact emergency services if the MOB’s condition deteriorates.

FOULED ANCHOR RECOVERY USING CHAIN RING ROPE AND DINGHY

IF NO CHAIN LOOP AVAILABLE THEN MAY TRY A ROPE LOOP WITH A WEIGHT ATTACHED TO IT FOR SIMILAR PURPOSE

POISONOUS creatures * may be DANGEROUS especially IF ALLERGIC

If needed a small ring net with a handle can help controling the area around yacht to allow for swimming if you feel able.

Harvest them gently swimming with mask and fins and place them in a bucket secured from yacht.

AVOID TO USE ON THE WOUND :

Tab or bottle water, vinegar, alcohol, ammonia

Rubbing with sand or beach towel

Warm and compressing bandages

Purple Jellyfish

Small floating in the sea creatures with stings that can be very painful because of the neurotoxin they contains. This year, it looks as if we are going to spend our summer vacations with their company … not only in Greek seas but in the whole Mediterranean Sea.

Stings causes pain that typically lasts 1–2 weeks, local redness, swelling and a rash, but it is generally not dangerous and there are no known fatalities. On occasion, symptoms may be more general and include dizziness, vomiting and diarrhea.

Wash with plenty sea water not with fresh tap water

Remove rests of the jellyfish with a credit card – Never with the hands.

You can carefully apply on the wound a paste made of 2 soup spoons baking soda + 2 soup spoons of sea water leave there for a few minutes.

You can apply cold ice for 10 minutes with interruption and in a tea towel so that the skin is not injured.

Cortisone cream on mild rash for the next days

Check with a dermatologist if the rash persists or grows or if wounds.

Go to Emergencies if systematic symptoms such as shortness of breath, hoarseness or general discomfort

Wasp stings are a common, yet painful problem. in the whole Mediterranean Sea.

They inject a venom into your skin with their sting.

Most wasp stings can be incredibly painful, especially if they surprise you.

But after the initial sting, they mostly cause only minor discomfort, which can be treated at home.

Common wasp sting symptoms include pain in the sting area, swelling and redness that extends out of the sting site, itching, heat at the site of sting, and potentially hives if your body has a reaction to the sting.

Wasps

If you have been stung by a wasp, it is common for the site to have a large reaction. That may not usually indicate a cause for concern unless you are alergic or if you have been stung in the mouth, nose, or throat in which cases you should asap seek medical attention.

Wash The Area

First, wash the affected area with warm soap and water. Cleaning the site can remove any bacteria or venom the wasp might have carried. This will also help wash out some of the venom left behind by the wasp.

Apply Cold Pack

May wrap a thin cloth around an ice or cold pack. Apply this pack to the sting site for 30 to 60 minutes, in intervals of 10 minutes on and off. This will help reduce the swelling and pain of the wasp sting.

Take Anti-inflammatory Medication

To reduce the swelling, you may take an anti-inflammatory medicine like ibuprofen. This will help lessen pain from the wasp sting and also reduce swelling at the sting site.

Apply Antihistamine

Another symptom of wasp stings is itchiness at the injection site and surrounding area, depending on how far the sting has spread. To relieve the itchiness, which can increase for hours after the initial sting, may apply an antihistamine, corticosteroid, or calamine cream to the entire red and swollen area. This will also help alleviate the pain of the sting.

Their venoms are heat-labile and have high molecular weight proteins with antigenic properties and enzymes, quite similar to other marine venoms. Such instability to heat is the basis of the hot water immersion treatment. Heat causes the denaturalisation of the protein that renders the venom inactive.

In the event of envenomation by above family of venomous fish, non-scalding hot water immersion at 45°C up to 30 minutes appears to be the appropriate initial treatment. It has been suggested and shows favourable results in the literature that this form of treatment also modulates pain receptors in the nervous system to reduce of pain.

Do’s:

  • Do not remove stingers without wearing suitable protective hand gloves

  • Do not medicate the individual, unless advised by a healthcare professional

  • Do not move the affected region of the body too much

  • Do not run or exercise which might increase the circulation of toxin in the body

  • Do not elevate the affected area above the heart level, since this can also increase circulation of the toxin
